Yamaha Guitar Serial Number Lookup

Looked at different websites.and to say the least yamaha serial numbers i find a bit strange. Problem is that the first 2 numbers stand for the year,so it repeats every decade too bad. Two firts letters are the year,if made in japan. Number of my ll-26 is QKJ064A i come up with march 2004. For example, serial number 07100091 indicates a guitar built in 2007 (07), in October of that year (10), and that it was the 91st guitar made that month (0091). Similarly, serial number 09050112 indicates the 112th guitar made during May 2009.

Dating SG’s by serial number

The “History of Yamaha Guitars“, a good but far from complete book on Yamaha guitars, gives the following serial number chart for SG’s (and SX) guitars:

Yamaha Bass Guitar Serial Number Lookup

Some (perhaps even many) very early “modern” SG’s (1500, 2000 etc) have a serial number that doesn’t match the system above. They have the 1976 SG175 type 5 digit number.

Now the good part. History of Yamaha Guitars states that this numbering system is valid for SG and SX guitars. But also my SF guitars and my SC guitars (all 70’ies) match the above numbering system. I don’t know for sure but it looks like these guitars can be dated by the chart above too. Luckely these guitars normaly also have a pickup number that makes them datable.
